The St. Vincent de Paul Society is the largest lay Catholic charitable organization in the world. It was founded in 1833 by Frederick Ozanam and began in St. Louis in 1845. The goal of the Mary Mother conference is to be the face of Jesus in bringing His love to our neighbors in need within our parish boundaries and to any member of the parish who come to us for assistance. Our Conference meets the 1st & 3rd Tuesdays of the month.
COUNCIL PROGRAMS – Programs offered by the St. Louis Area Council include:
- Air conditioning assistance
- Car purchase
- Car repair
- Disaster relief
- Food
- Prescription Drug assistance
- Thrift stores for used clothing, household items, and new mattresses
- Utility assistance
Our conference uses the gifts provided by the parish to assist those we visit with food, rent, utility and other expenses. Thrift Store vouchers, earned by volunteer work at the stores and semi-annual clothing/household furnishing drives, are used for clothing, household items and furniture.
FOOD PANTRY – Because our food pantry does not include refrigeration, all donated food must be in cans or boxes. Please see the weekly notice in the bulletin for products currently needed.
SCRAP METAL PICKUPS – Scrap metal and u wanted metal household appliances are picked up free of charge, dismantled and taken to the recycling center. Heavy appliances must be on the ground floor for pickup. See SVDP’s weekly bulleting notice for [hone number to schedule a pickup.
SVDP THRIFT STORE – The Thrift Store closest to MMOC is at 3924 Lemay Ferry Rd, across from Arby’s & K-Mart. Our Thrift Stores raise money through sales to the public and serve as an important resource for clothing and household items for our clients through vouchers issued by the Conference.
THRIFT STORE DONATIONS
- Clothing, linens and small household items may be placed in plastic trash bags and placed in the blue collection box on the parking lot. MMOC receives payment for items donated through the collection box.
- Larger items may be dropped off at the store’s load dock.
- Call the Council offices at 314-881-6006 for SVDP truck pickup of furniture and other larger items.
- Our Conference also schedules a clothing drive twice a year on the parking lot for clothing and household items. Donations made in this manner earn voucher credit so that our clients may obtain needed clothing and household items at no cost to the Conference.
MONETARY DONATIONS – SVDP requests donations on the 5th Sunday of the month, four times a year, but accepts Honor and Memorial donations at any time. Contact Dick Drury to place envelopes at the funeral home.
DONATE A CAR – Running or not, SVDP accepts vehicle (truck, van, boat, motorcycle, motor home) donations. Call (800) 322-8284 and the Council will handle the details, including towing, free of charge, and will notify you of the tax donation.
