At times, it’s funny to recognize that we still often think our “search” for God, poetically described as “nearer than our breath,” as somehow being self-initiated. Did you ever think that the best way to truly “find” the Divine Presence permeating all things is to willingly plunge headlong into the contemplative darkness of trust and not-knowing, knowing that we will eventually “blunder into the arms of God” by grace? Parishioner and contemplative practitioner Joy Kleucker offers this poem as a meditation on darkness:
Blind Man's Bluff Elizaberh B Rooney, 1980
I spend so much time Feeling around in the dark, Hoping that I will blunder Into the arms of God.
The times of silence And the child-like self-denials, The attempts at half-understood Varieties of prayer, The falling down and getting up again -- All, all are intended Somehow to fumble my way toward Him.
I believe in a Reality Beyond my comprehension and my touch And I want to be where He is. I have never wanted anything as much.
