For the Church's first sixteen centuries, Contemplative Prayerwas the goal of all Christian spirituality. After the Reformation, unfortunately, this living tradition was virtually lost. Today, with cross-cultural dialogue, monastic tradition and historical research, the recovery of the Christian contemplative tradition is occurring. * * * Centering Prayer is a simple method of prayer for the average disciple that sets up the ideal conditions to rest in quite awareness of God's presence. The modern method of this ancient prayer form came to be known as Centering Prayer after being offered in retreats at Saint Joseph's Abbey, Spencer, Massachusetts in the 1970's. * * * The use of Centering Prayer has spread throughout the United States and in many countries across the globe. It is practiced by disciples of many different Christian denominations.
