When we say that God is ineffable, unsearchable, unknowable, we are perhaps trying to express the notion that we can never reach the full depth of God’s love – somehow, there is always more to God’s love than what we’ve already uncovered. This is perhaps why there is always a yearning associated with the life of faith, because there is no point of arrival, but a never-ending journey deeper and deeper into the heart Love. There often come times in life where this journey into the Heart of God can stall. These times of spiritual inertia can be brought on by any number of factors. One factor that can keep us from the taking the next step of the spiritual journey is a simple lack of knowing how to move to greater depth. The intellectual pursuit of God can yield many great gifts. However, ultimately, we recognize that the mind is not the part of us best-suited to enter into Love, but rather, the heart. One of the gifts of contemplative practice is precisely that it allows us to move our relationship with Divine Love beyond the bounds of the mind. The repeated return to the sacred silence of contemplative practice gives God an open invitation to greater and greater revelation of Divine Love through the channel best equipped to receive it: the open heart.
