This week, we’ll identify the seven principles of Catholic Social Teaching ( CST), each of which will be discussed in more detail in coming weeks in our Food for Thought column for the bulletin. We will also be presenting the six areas where the Peace and Justice Ministry will suggest ways in which we as parish and individuals can live out these teachings from our Pope, our bishops, and other Church leaders taught over many decades and based on scripture.
The seven principles of CST address: life and dignity of the human person; call to family, community, and participation; rights and responsibilities; option for the poor and vulnerable; the dignity of work and rights of workers; solidarity; and care for God’s creation.
The six areas of peace and justice ministry outlined by the U. S. bishops are: anchoring social ministry through prayer and worship; sharing the message through preaching and education; serving the “least of these” through outreach and charity; advocating for justice through legislative action; creating community through organizing for justice; and building solidarity beyond parish boundaries.
As Catholics, we believe that our faith is meant to make a difference in the communities, societies, and world in which we live. Catholic social teaching can guide us in this journey.
