The world's largest rainforest is the Amazon in Brazil. It provides 20% of the world's oxygen and is home to thousands of plant and animal species. It is in danger of disappearing because of clear cutting, mining, burning and cattle ranching.
There is hope to save the Amazon through the ornamental fish trade that supplies fresh water fish to pet stores all over the world.
Beautiful, tiny fish such as the piaba bring high prices to the people involved in the trade. It provides an alternative livelihood to the Brazilians. The Project Piaba has been established to help solve some of the problems such as stressed fish. A festival is held each year to celebrate the piaba fish.
