If we’re honest, any relationship that isn’t growing and changing, is instead dying. So, our prayer lives will necessarily change, both in light of God’s continual revelation to us of the Godself and our own True Selves, and in response to the circumstances of our lives as they develop. The reality and necessity of change in our relationship with God has very practical implications for our particular prayer practices. While we shouldn’t make hasty changes without giving practices a chance to take root in us, it is also reasonable that over periods of months and years, there should be evolution in our practice of prayer, even if the changes are subtle. After all, does date night with your spouse now look the same as when you first met? So, don’t be concerned if your prayer periods aren’t as long or as many right now as they once were, maybe because your life is hectic with the addition of a child, or maybe because you’ve become better at spotting “contemplative moments” outside of prayer periods. If spoken words fall silent, welcome the silence, and if a piece of music offers you new awareness of Divine Presence, don’t be afraid to incorporate it into your practice. It’s just the next phase in your eternal relationship with the Beloved.
