Damon Thibodeaux spent 15 years in solitary confinement on death row for a murder he did not commit. He was allowed out of his cell for one hour each day to sit in the hallway or walk in a yard the size of a dog pen! In 2012, he became the 300th prisoner to be exonerated and freed through DNA testing because of the Innocence Project. Imagine yourself in his shoes. Imagine if you were wrongfully sentenced to 15 years in a cell. Imagine you are only allowed to be out of the cell for ONE HOUR a day, in a confined hallway or a yard the size of a dog pen. (As a nation we could hardly stand to be quarantined in our own homes during the height of the covid pandemic when it was for our own good!) People are exonerated and freed when conclusive evidence of their innocence is later discovered, but that often takes years! We cannot always rely on DNA evidence to support guilt or innocence because DNA evidence exists in only 10% of cases.* Executing countries in 2021 (Reported executions) China 1000+ Iran 314 + Egypt 83+ Saudi Arabia 65 Syria 24+ Somalia 21 + Iraq 17+ Yemen 14 + USA 11 55 countries still retain the death penalty for ordinary crimes ** Consider: How does it feel to see my country listed with these other countries?
