World Refugee Awareness Day
The United Nations has designated June 20th of each year as World Refugee Awareness Day when all countries focus on ways to improve the lives of refugees. During these times of unrest, war and displacement of people from various countries, it may be helpful to review the meaning of the words used to describe them: refugee, immigrant or migrant. According to the UN: “Refugees are people who are fleeing armed conflicts or persecution and leave their home countries because it is too dangerous for them to stay. Immigrants make a conscious decision to move to another country for better employment, education or living conditions. Migrants move from place to place within their own country or across borders usually for better income such as seasonal work.”
Reflection: Regardless of how we classify those new to our area with different languages, skin colors, customs, etc. we all have one major truth in common with all of them. We are ALL children of the same God - brothers and sisters in Christ - ALL part of God’s family. Information and reflection by Helen Collins.
