Presidents Day reminds us of what our founders set down for us with this great experiment called America. They were brilliant but imperfect people. Many were enslavers. But their moral failings, especially viewed through a 21st-century prism, should not banish them from the hallowed pages of history. It’s right, however, to identify and teach that the architectural, economic and intellectual contributions of Black Americans, both enslaved and free, qualify them as our founding fathers and mothers, too. In the coming weeks I hope to shed some light on Black history as just that, Black history, and not what others might try to undermine or tag with catchy, negative, phrasing of words. Pres. Lincoln ran on a platform that ALL men are created equal.
Reflection: After seeing our display in the parish hall, am I more enlightened? Can I realize the contributions of my black brothers and sisters? Has my outlook of those marginalized changed in any way? Interested in joining MMOC’s Peace and Justice Ministry? Call Mike Jarvis at 314.729.0860.
