Since we are in the timeframe of enrolling for Medicare Supplements and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) the following is information on the Uninsured. In 2010,16% of all Americans were uninsured. The ACA generated one of the largest expansions of health care in U.S. history. In the first three months of 2023, the number of Americans without health insurance dropped to a record low of 7.7%. An additional 24.3 million (7.2%) of the population are estimated to be uninsured. Of these 15.2 million are eligible for subsidized coverage.
Despite policy efforts to improve affordability of coverage, uninsured people cite the cost of insurance as the main reason they lack coverage. In 2022, 64% of uninsured adults were uninsured due to the high cost. Many people do not have access through jobs and for some people, particularly poor adults in states that did not expand Medicaid, remain ineligible for Medicaid or Marketplace coverage.
People without insurance have less access to care than people who are insured. One in five American uninsured adults in 2022 went without medical care due to cost. Studies repeatedly demonstrate that uninsured people are less likely to receive preventive care and services for major health conditions and chronic diseases.
What is our part in securing health care for our brothers and sisters who remain uninsured?
